In the past few years, I have had the opportunity to spend considerable time in a particular kind of built form that I have always wanted to design (only half a project so far) yet never wanted to be a resident or visitor of. As it happens, one has no choice in such matters. However, what I have come to realise is that there is always a silver lining and it is up to us to find it. While visiting one such space, I came across a very interesting set of paintings by two artists, Vanessa Bryson and Suse Neilebock. These paintings are inspired by different pieces of music and are intended to be experienced in both, tactile and visual form. The walk down Changle Lu ( previous post ), where we saw those motorcycles with sidecars, led us to the lawns of the Garden Hotel which was the venue for Beernanza, an event dedicated to beer (duh!) and music. We were blessed with a warm, sunny, late afternoon entry when the crowd was still thin. Some of our friends waited for almost two hours to get in! Although everyone was guzzling down beer and gin+tonic, I had to be the #RealMan (someone had to do it, right?) and drink ginger beer - that heavenly, non alcoholic elixir for the chosen few. Believe me when I tell you, no one else would have had the courage to try it in Beernanza. The time finally came when our friend, DJ Baksheesh started his set and he really got the crowd grooving. Parks and plazas are an integral part of the Shanghai lifestyle. I missed out on the "people around the pond" photograph though. People are either singing or dancing or busking or sketching or doing calligraphy on the flooring with water or just plain chilling out.
